Romans Cad V9 will enable companies in these markets to meet the challenges they now face, while offering new development opportunities more in line with consumer demand.

With Romans Cad V9, Lectra enables footwear, luggage and leather goods manufacturers to enhance their competitiveness and significantly reduce their development times through Romans Cad 3D Sketch, a unique new working method.

This new version of the solution suite will give manufacturers more room to maneuver as they address the issue of increasing production and development costs, regardless of their profile or geographical location. Companies based in emerging, developing, and Western nations alike, whether they are present locally or internationally, will be able to benefit from all the advantages the solution offers. With Romans Cad V9, manufacturers will also be able to control profit margins and costs, launch new models on the market more frequently (reducing time to market), and improve production quality. The integration of Romans Cad throughout the product creation chain substantially reduces design and production times as well as the number of physical prototypes needed throughout the process. As a result, the time needed to design a new collection can be cut by up to 30%.

In a difficult economic climate where costs are increasing and retail prices stagnating or, some cases, falling, manufacturers in the West are trying, above all else, to protect their profit margins. Romans Cad V9 is the perfect solution to this challenge, allowing companies to control costs right from the design stage. The new version of Romans Cad reduces development times, which gives manufacturers the ability to react more quickly to consumer needs and expectations based on trends that follow fashions and the general zeitgeist.

For emerging countries such as China and India—and, to a lesser extent, Russia—the new version of Romans Cad will also offer manufacturers the potential to expand their local market share. It provides all the tools required for the development of product lines and for the creation of a strong and positive brand image, both of which are essential pre-requisites to tackling international markets. In other countries, like Brazil, which is seeing success with its venture into the footwear market, the new version of Romans Cad will enable manufacturers to expand their customer base by designing and manufacturing finished products for export.

"The footwear, luggage and leather goods industries face many challenges at the moment: an increasingly complex product development process, a constant demand for new collections, and multiple design and production sites spread throughout the world," explains Daniel Harari, Lectra CEO. Flow Science Releases FLOW-3D/MP v4.0 for CFD

Flow Science, Inc. announces that a new release of the distributed-memory version of its FLOW-3D computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software, FLOW-3D/MP, is now available.

FLOW-3D/MP Version 4.0 offers substantial performance improvements, including significant decreases in problem setup and simulation times. Crucial developments to the software have reduced the amount of data sent via MPI communication, cut down on the number of synchronization points and improved computational load balancing using the automatic domain decomposition tool (ADT). ADT allows users to decompose the domain quickly and efficiently, instead of relying on a tedious and often inaccurate manual procedure. All of this makes it possible to extend scaling to up to 32 cores and achieve runtime improvements of as much as 16x.

The physical models and numerical methods of FLOW-3D/MP v4.0 are based on FLOW-3D v9.3.2.

“This new version will enable our user community to achieve highly-accurate and reliable answers in a half day or less which might have previously taken a week,” said David Souders, Flow Science’s Vice President of Sales & Marketing.

FLOW-3D/MP, first released in 2006, uses multi-block methodology to decompose the computational domain into blocks, which are then distributed among the nodes in a cluster. FLOW-3D/MP has been benchmarked and tested extensively on both Windows Compute Cluster and Linux workstations.

Flow Science has commenced shipment of this new release to customers under maintenance contracts.

Pointwise Releases Gridgen v15.15 for CFD

pointwise-logo Pointwise today released the latest update to its Gridgen meshing software for computational fluid dynamics (CFD) with new tools for drastic size reductions in hybrid meshes.

"Customers love hybrid meshes because they can be generated very quickly using Gridgen's T-Rex technique, but the resulting meshes can be very large," said Dr. John Steinbrenner, Pointwise's vice president for research and development. "In the latest Gridgen release, improvements to the algorithm that combines tetrahedra into prisms produce up to a 57 percent reduction in total cell count relative to the previous version of the software."

Gridgen's T-Rex technique extrudes layers of high quality, high aspect ratio tetrahedra for boundary layer resolution, gradually transitioning to isotropic tets away from the body. An optional post-processing step combines adjacent tetrahedra into pyramid and prism elements in the extrusion layer. Prism recombination was frequently halted in previous versions by mesh quality issues and cell topology restrictions on symmetry planes. By removing many of these limitations in the new Gridgen Version 15.15, final cell counts can be reduced dramatically. Customers benefit because a smaller grid requires less memory, runs faster in the CFD solver and produces results sooner.

"A 27 million cell mesh for a modern, complex fighter aircraft was reduced to 12 million cells, and similar reductions were obtained for the AIAA shock boundary layer interaction benchmark case," said Steinbrenner. "Combined with the automation of this technique, these smaller meshes make hybrid meshing very effective for the CFD practitioner."

Pointwise, Inc. is solving the top problem facing engineering analysts today - mesh generation for computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The company's Gridgen and Pointwise software generates structured, unstructured and hybrid meshes; interfaces with CFD solvers, such as ANSYS FLUENT, STAR-CD, ANSYS CFX and OpenFOAM as well as many neutral formats, such as CGNS; runs on Windows (Intel and AMD), Linux (Intel and AMD), Mac and Unix, and has scripting languages that can automate CFD meshing. Large manufacturing firms and research organizations worldwide rely on Pointwise as their complete CFD preprocessing solution. More information about Gridgen and Pointwise is available at pointwise.com.

SYCODE Releases Inventor File Import Plug-in for AutoCAD

sycode-logo SYCODE has released an Autodesk Inventor file import plug-in for AutoCAD. The plug-in allows users to import Inventor part and assembly files into AutoCAD without the need of an Inventor license on the computer or network.

"We have been receiving requests from AutoCAD users wanting to import part and assembly files created in Autodesk Inventor,” explains Deelip Menezes, Founder and CEO of SYCODE. "Inventor already has the ability to exchange 3D data with AutoCAD via the AEC Exchange method. However, this method requires a license of Inventor in order to perform the conversion. In the event that an AutoCAD user gets an Inventor Part (IPT) or Assembly (IAM) file and does not have access to Inventor, there is no way to get the 3D data stored in the IPT or IAM file into AutoCAD. That is precisely when Inventor Import for AutoCAD will come in handy”.

Inventor Import for AutoCAD can read Inventor part IPT files from Inventor 6 to Inventor 2010 and assembly IAM files from Inventor 11 to Inventor 2010. The plug-in is powered by the widely used 3D InterOp technology from Spatial. 3D InterOp is the industry standard for proprietary CAD file format data exchange and is used in almost all the major CAD systems. Besides data exchange 3D InterOp also offers powerful repairing and healing features which are extensively used in Inventor Import for AutoCAD. Repairing involves checking the file for corrupted data and fixing the invalid data. Healing corrects the differences in precision. Inventor Import for AutoCAD also creates a detailed log file which is extremely useful in identifying data translation problems and aids in locating and fixing errors.

Inventor Import for AutoCAD works with AutoCAD 2000 through to AutoCAD 2010, 32 Bit as well as 64 Bit and is available as a fully functional trial. The plug-in comes with an installer and detailed documentation in the form of a compiled HTML help file which contains a step-by-step tutorial to get the end user started in the shortest possible time.

Delcam to launch new PowerINSPECT at Euromold

delcam-logo Delcam will launch the new, 2010 version of its PowerINSPECT inspection software at the Euromold exhibition to be held in Frankfurt from 2nd to 5th December. This latest release offers even easier inspection of parts, tooling and prototypes against CAD data. The system is already the world’s leading hardware-independent inspection software, with this new version making it even more attractive to users of all types of metrology equipment, including manual and CNC CMMs, inspection arms and optical devices.

In the 2010 version, the creation and editing of inspection sequences has been improved by adding the ability to insert extra points or features anywhere within the sequence, not just at the end. This will be useful for all users but especially for those creating inspection sequences with larger numbers of measurements. It will also make it easier to update complex sequences during long production runs, when process or design changes require modifications to the inspection routine. The ‘simple measures’ functionality included in the previous PowerINSPECT release has been extended in the latest version.  The range of pre-defined inspection sequences for common measurement patterns has been increased, and simple alignments have been introduced.

The GD&T Wizard has also been improved and simplified. PowerINSPECT now offers the ability to select features from the CAD view, with item types shown by an icon, making selection easier.

PowerINSPECT 2010 includes improved simulation for checking sequences that are to be run on CNC CMMs or to be used for On-Machine Verification. The collision checking has been made more flexible and easier to use, with options to stop the sequence automatically once a collision is detected and to continue the simulation until the next problem is found.

The ability to reuse measurement results has been extended. PowerINSPECT 6 introduced the ability to create a feature from a combination of other features, for example, to combine the results from a series of circles to create the inspection report for a cylinder. PowerINSPECT 2010 builds on this functionality with the new ‘point source’ feature which gives the ability to define these relationships offline. This improves consistency for batch measurement, with the measurements being able to be reused in the same way for every component.

Finally, labels for reporting purposes can be attached to selected points within point clouds generated by laser scanners. For example, the user could highlight in the report the points that are furthest out of tolerance or could identify critical points in the design for detailed reporting.

This new release continues the mission and offers capabilities that further enhance accuracy and overall turn-around time. “With PowerFLOW 4.2 and true rotating geometry, not only are we handling real-world applications that were not practically possible before, but we are also providing tools, templates and physics improvements that streamline the simulation process, enabling product performance analysis to be performed at the very earliest stages of design,” commented Charles Alexander, Exa’s Director of Product Management for Simulation Products.

True rotating geometry, frequently called ‘sliding mesh’ by the simulation community, simulates the actual movement of arbitrary geometry during the course of the simulation. “PowerFLOW is an inherently transient simulator,” remarked James Hoch, Exa’s Vice President of Software Development. “Updating the position of the geometry at each time-step is a natural extension of the core technology, resulting in very accurate prediction of the fluid flow in and around rotating geometry.”

PowerFLOW 4.2 Overview
This newest Exa release adds functionality that not only extends the simulation capabilities of PowerFLOW, but when coupled with complementary products such as PowerTHERM® and PowerACOUSTICS™ also improves aerodynamic, aeroacoustic and thermal results.

  • True Rotating Geometry. PowerFLOW 4.2 further extends Exa’s leadership in simulation technology by offering the first practical and accurate simulation of the actual movement of rotating components. True rotating geometry enables prediction of the noise and performance of HVAC and cooling fans. It also improves accuracy for any application that has rotating components, especially those transient in nature such as brake cooling and wheel aerodynamics. PowerFLOW 4.2 offers an easy-to-use case setup for true rotating geometry as well as built-in support for visualization of results showing the geometry rotating.
  • Long Term Transient Simulations. PowerFLOW 4.2, an inherently transient solver, coupled with Exa’s PowerTHERM, now allows for the simulation of minutes or even hours of real time for the accurate prediction of critical thermal cool-down conditions such as key-off and soak.
  • Accuracy. In addition to the accuracy benefits realized with true rotating geometry, PowerFLOW 4.2 offers an improved turbulent thermal wall model and porous media physics for enhanced precision and robustness in these extremely complex simulations.
  • Turnaround Time. Exa continually works to streamline the engineering simulation and analysis process. Exa has now published validated design study best practices using reduced resolution runs that dramatically reduce the time and compute resources required. With PowerFLOW 4.2 extensive turnaround time enhancements are included, such as: application specific case templates—a sophisticated automated case setup capability which allows capture and re-use of company best practices; enhanced cluster/queuing support; automatic coarse-to-fine seeding capabilities; and real-time volume visualization.

SynaptiCAD Released High Performance Verilog 2001 Simulator

synapticad-logo

For a limited time, SynaptiCAD will be giving away free "no strings attached" 6 month licenses for VeriLogger Extreme, a high-performance compiled-code Verilog 2001 simulator that significantly reduces simulation debug time. Free licenses will be available for both Linux and Windows versions of the simulator. Unlike the lower cost simulators typically provided with FPGA tools, SynaptiCAD's simulator is being distributed without any code that slows down the simulator when run on larger designs, making it run over 10x faster than the competition on larger simulation runs.

Not just an Evaluation License

"This is not a just an evaluation license, it's a free license that can be used for real commercial work," explains Dan Notestein, president of SynaptiCAD. "There are several established players in the simulator market, so it's not an easy market to gain a foothold. When we started this project, we knew we would need not only a better product, but also a better way to get customers to try it out and see the benefits. After giving it some thought, we decided the best way to enable designers to evaluate the simulator environment was to let them use it for free to develop real designs, since the productivity leap provided by the tool set really comes from a large number of improvements to the test and debug environment, rather than a single major enhancement that's easy to communicate in a short press release."

A Sign of the Times?

SynaptiCAD wants to make it clear that this offer is in no way a response to the current global recession, although it may be fortuitous timing, especially for new startups and engineering consultants looking to keep their initial tool investments low during this risky period. According to Donna Mitchell, VP of Marketing at SynaptiCAD, "We've actually been planning this campaign for well over two years now. We knew that we would see a large increase in our user base with this offer, so before we began the program, we wanted to be very sure we had the product not only extremely stable, but also extremely easy to use, so as to keep our support staff from being overloaded with questions and feature requests. Designing a reliable, easy-to-use simulation environment is much more difficult than it might sound, and it's only now, after working with early customers for a couple of years, that we feel that VeriLogger has reached the maturity level necessary to start this campaign."

LEDAS Ships LGS 3D Geometric Constraint Solver v2.0

ledas-logo

LEDAS Ltd., an independent provider of variational design tools, component technologies, and software development services for CAD/CAM/CAE/PLM market, today announced the availability of version 2.0 of its LGS 3D geometric constraint solver. As a core component of parametric 3D modeling applications, LGS 3D allows users to express their design intent through geometric constraints and driving dimensions.

Since its first release in 2005, a dozen CAD/CAM/CAE vendors have licensed the LGS 3D software component, embedding it into applications that perform assembly design, motion simulation, and history-free 3D geometry editing. It now used by thousands engineers, architects, and designers around the globe. During last four years, LEDAS released five intermediate versions of LGS 3D – from 1.1 to 1.5.

New Features in LGS 3D

The new LGS 3D version 2.0 contains significant functional enhancements that were suggested by LEDAS customers. It also boosts performance and improves stability. These improvements were obtained after several man-years of testing the components with different applications on thousands of commercial scenarios.

A new API function supports the definition of simultaneous movements by several geometric objects, each with a different rotation and translation. LEDAS customers can now employ more sophisticated scenarios of motion simulation. On the application side, version 2.0 defines optional memory management tools for controlling and optimizing memory use. This new feature is crucial for CAD/CAM/CAE applications that model large assemblies.

The time LGS 3D takes to solve constraints has been significantly reduced, and it is now up to ten times faster than v1.5 for large models. The over-defined constraint diagnostics algorithm has been improved, a function crucial to 3D geometry editing applications that generate many constraints automatically to keep design intent.

Version 2.0 of LGS 3D is already embedded in several commercial applications running on Windows XP/Vista and Mac OS X, including recent versions of the Driving Dimensions plug-in for Google SketchUp and McNeel & Associates’ Rhinoceros. The Driving Dimensions plug-ins aims at making advanced mechanical CAD technology available to all users of popular 3D software at an affordable price. ODA Announces First Production Release of DGNdirect

oda-logo

The Open Design Alliance (ODA) today announced the first production release of DGNdirect available to ODA members globally. DGNdirect includes a comprehensive feature set for DGN files, including the ability to load V7 and V8 files, convert V7 to V8 files, save V8 files, access data, edit data, render data, and export to PDF and SVG file formats.

Early work on DGNdirect began in 2003 as an independent project. As the ODA platform expanded and matured, the decision was made in 2007 to restart DGNdirect development as an integrated part of the platform. Integrating DGNdirect into the ODA platform provided a number of key benefits: consolidation of common functionality such as geometry and rendering, consistent API styles between DWGdirect and DGNdirect, and clean support for features which utilize both formats such as mixed external references (DWG files referenced from DGN files and vice versa). The new DGNdirect was released for testing in March 2008, and during the past year and a half the feature set and overall quality have grown steadily.

Chief Technical Officer of the ODA, Neil Peterson, stated, “Delivering DGNdirect to ODA members is an enormous success for our development teams and for the ODA platform. Beta versions of DGNdirect have seen heavy use among ODA members for more than a year now, which has helped greatly to stabilize core functionality. DGNdirect builds on the success of our beta releases and contains support for a number of key features including dimensions, True Colors, and improved support for text.”

Arnold van der Weide, ODA President, added, “The ODA platform was originally developed to work with the DWG file format. Later the core platform was expanded to include ADTdirect, a vertical application which supports custom architectural objects, but still within the DWG file format. The release of DGNdirect marks a new level of achievement for our organization—it is a tangible example of how the ODA platform can be used to provide comprehensive support for new file formats. It clearly demonstrates the strength and versatility of the platform, and we expect this type of usage to increase in the future.”

kubit Releases PointCloud, Pro v5.0 for AutoCAD

kubit-logo kubit announces the latest release of PointCloud and PointCloud Pro version 5.0, which process 3D point clouds in AutoCAD.

The use of a 3D Laser scanner to survey can quickly result in a cloud of more than one million points; none of which contain any intelligence or reference information on the their topology or  what they are supposed to be representing.

PointCloud and PointCloud Pro from kubit allow the display and processing of point clouds directly inside AutoCAD. Every single point of a 3D cloud can be accessed (OSNAP) and thus be used in combination with all traditional AutoCAD commands. Furthermore, PointCloud provides numerous tools for an efficient analysis of 3D laser scan data.

Coordinate systems, polylines, planes and cylinders can easily be fitted to point cloud sections. Planes can be fitted and intersected to quickly derive the edges of houses or curbs. Corners can also be precisely determined using the intersection point of three planes. Full pipe-runs and routing lines can easily be fitted for pipe design programs.

The results of such post-processing techniques can vary between 2D plans or 3D models.

The latest release of PointCloud Pro 5 extends AutoCAD by adding a photogrammetric, multiple image analysis. Three-dimensional objects can now be modeled using digital photos instead of scanned point clouds.

Oriented images can be generated directly within PointCloud and then drawn on to get an image plan. Lines drawn on a two dimensional photograph are simultaneously displayed inside the 3D point cloud at the correct geometric position.

PointCloud license holders may deliver fully functional cloud files free of charge with the Free Edition version of PointCloud. Thus, service providers can hand their measured point cloud data to their customers for further processing in AutoCAD without the customers having to purchase a license of PointCloud.

Versions 5 of PointCloud and PointCloud Pro support AutoCAD 2007-2010 and all vertical applications (e.g. Architecture, Civil 3D). They run on both 32-bit and 64-bit operating systems. Prospects may try the software free of charge.

Delcam Launch Integrated CAM at SolidWorks World

delcam-logo

Delcam, the world’s leading specialist supplier of machining software, will launch its integrated CAM system for SolidWorks at the SolidWorks World 2010 exhibition to be held in Anaheim, California, from 31st January to 3rd February.  This initial version of Delcam for SolidWorks will include the company’s industry-leading technology for drilling and two- through five-axis milling.  Future releases will cover the full range of machining operations, including turning, mill-turn and wire EDM.

Delcam for SolidWorks combines the benefits associated with Delcam’s PowerMILL and FeatureCAM CAM systems.  It is based on Delcam’s proven machining algorithms that are already used by more than 30,000 customers around the world.  For example, the software will offer PowerMILL’s exceptional speed of toolpath calculation, plus all of advanced strategies for high-speed machining, including trochoidal roughing, spiral finishing and Delcam’s patented Race-Line Machining technique.  These strategies ensure increased productivity, maximum tool life and immaculate surface finish, even when cutting the hardest, most challenging materials.

At the same time, Delcam for SolidWorks will have the same strong focus on ease-of-use as FeatureCAM, including all of the knowledge-based automation that makes it so consistent and reliable.  Most importantly, the software will include FeatureCAM’s Automatic Feature Recognition system which automatically extracts detailed feature information from the SolidWorks model.  The system not only recognizes holes and pockets within the model but also groups similar holes by size and type automatically, and indentifies draft on pocket walls, and any fillets or chamfers within the pocket.  Once the features have been identified, Delcam for SolidWorks undertakes automatic selection of cutting tools, machining strategies, and feeds and speeds, to complete the programming operation.

Delcam for SolidWorks will, of course, be fully integrated into the SolidWorks environment so that the program looks and behaves like SolidWorks.  It will offer full associativity so that any changes in the CAD model will be reflected automatically in the toolpaths.  However, this associativity will be more intelligent than that offered in many other integrated CAM systems.  Delcam for SolidWorks will not simply modify the existing toolpaths but will also review the choice of cutting tools and machining strategies, and change them if necessary.

All toolpaths generated with Delcam for SolidWorks can be checked by the integrated simulation module on the computer before being passed to the machine tool.  Finally, the software comes with Delcam’s full range of post-processors to allow fast accurate data transfer to all leading types of machining equipment.

Delcam for SolidWorks marks a new direction for Delcam.  Previously, the company has supplied all of its machining software as stand-alone systems that can be linked to any CAD program.  "We have received many requests from customers that want to be able to undertake their CAM programming from within the SolidWorks environment,” explained Tom McCollough, Vice President of FeatureCAM Development, who has overseen the creation of the new program.  "Delcam for SolidWorks provides direct access to Delcam’s world-leading CAM algorithms from within this leading design software.”

At SolidWorks World, Delcam will meet with leading international SolidWorks dealers to establish a strong distribution channel for its new product.  Any SolidWorks representatives that are interested in reselling Delcam’s new software are invited to visit the company on booth 315.

Schott Systeme Launching New Design & Machining Functions Within Pictures by PC 3.4 CAD/CAM Software.

schott-systeme-logo

Helping mold tool companies to remain competitive, German software developer Schott Systeme have frozen their pricing for the 12th year running, while at the same time launching a raft of new design and machining functions within their latest Pictures by PC 3.4 CAD/CAM software.

Outlining the company's pricing policy, company founder and owner Hans-Joachim Schott states, “Our aim is to enable our customers to invest in the very latest CAD/CAM technology, for every single CNC machine tool, while keeping both purchase and operating costs to a bare minimum.” This policy means that their complete moldtool package for design and machining continues to remain under €10,000. With ongoing maintenance costs also being a major consideration, Herr Schott continues “Our customers have to earn money with us, so we have retained our 25 year old policy of not charging for yearly maintenance, instead offering free life time support, while giving our customers the choice of when they wish to purchase major upgrades.”

Focussing on their new software release, Schott Systeme have developed this latest version with the streamlining of the moldtool design and machining process very much in mind. This process starts with the quick and ‘clean’ import of customer models, and here Schott Systeme have enhanced their data import facilities to include the very latest versions of STEP and 3D IGES Solid formats. However for customers having to deal with poor quality data, considerable thought has been put into actual model repair, with an entirely new range of advanced surfacing functionality and a more advanced ‘Healing’ suite. Their existing ‘Tribrid’ mixed modeling techniques have also been improved to help customers working with STL mesh models, enabling them to construct core and cavity molds from mixed mesh, solid and surface models. This is also being accompanied by a new suite of mesh analysis, repair and handling tools.

Pictures by PC 3.4 also sees a number of enhancements to speed up the machining of mold tools. Firstly the software now utilises multi core processing, with users receiving an instant improvement in toolpath calculation times from between 30-50% on dual core PC’s, and from 40-60% on quad core versions, with additional gains achievable by using their latest 64bit version. The company has in addition further enhanced their ‘Freeform Feature Recognition’ module, aiding in the automatic extraction of complex freeform mold features to machine, such as tapered walls and freeform chamfers.

The company will be using this years Euromold exhibition to both celebrate their 26th anniversary, in addition to showcasing these latest CAD/CAM enhancements. Visitors are welcome in Hall 11 on Stand C63.
